Things were looking up for the pit bull puppies as they were old enough to go to their new homes. Sad to say, however, the woman who had adopted Runt Baby ran into financial difficulties and had to return the puppy. This may have been the start of the scary saga that Laurentha, their breeder, shared with me recently.

Shortly after the return, Laurentha began to notice that the puppies were having some major physical problems. Almost all were quite sick, with serious digestive symptoms which could lead to life-threatening dehydration.
Off they went to the veterinarian.
The diagnosis: parvo. Although the puppies had received their first set of vaccinations, they were in that delicate window between treatments where they were not yet fully protected.

Due to her own financial constraints, Laurentha was unable to afford to hospitalize them. She found herself in the role of vet tech and nursemaid to the pups. She administered subcutaneous fluids, medications and tender loving care. She knew the puppies needed intensive medical care if they were to survive.

Her son's girlfriend, who worked for a veterinarian, gave her an excellent idea: She suggested contacting the vaccine manufacturer, Merial, to see if they could help. Laurentha spoke to a company representative about her plight. Through this conversation, she was given the answer to her prayers: They agreed to make a contribution toward each puppy's care. Off they went to the hospital. The company's generosity saved these puppies lives.
Coupled with Laurentha's excellent home care and their subsequent hospitalization (with Laurentha's frequent visits to love on the puppies), I am happy to report that all are doing well and are home, playing and acting like nothing had happened.

I write this not only to tell of a happy outcome to what may have been a nightmare situation, but to stress how important it is to vaccinate puppies against this dreaded disease. Please talk to your veterinarian about all aspects of vaccinations and puppy care.

1. Unfortunately, I know about this all too well. A few years ago out of a litter of 4 pups, two contracted parvo. We lost Daphne, but thru quick vet action we were able to save Max. Please, Please be sure that your babies are protected from this terrible disease. As a side note, later Max developed seizures (dog epilepsi, I think). I always wondered if the parvo might have contributed to that. Anyone have any ideas?
