Michelle is a woman with a huge heart and a love for horses. A little while ago I wrote about her horse Rally.
Sunny's story is sadly all too typical of horses that find themselves being sent "down the road" when they no longer suit the needs of many owners. Thank goodness for folks like Michelle who rescued Rally, and now has given Sunny (above) a second chance and a forever home.
Michelle wrote to me about this beautiful golden palomino paint mare that stole her heart. The end to her story is joyful and full of hope.
When Michelle first learned about Sunny, the horse did not have a name. She had no loving owner. What she had was a trip to the final auction where she would undoubtedly be sold by the pound to a killer buyer for fast cash at the Sugarcreek horse auction in Ohio.
She was crammed into a trailer with strange horses she did not know. Scared, not knowing what was happening to her, she stoically and bravely allowed herself to be handled as she ran through the auction. A killer buyer purchased her. Two "Do Not Remove" tags were pasted on her hindquarters, secured with cement glue.
Forced into a small, dirty pen with many other frightened horses who paced back and forth, looking for an escape, she had no idea that her final destiny would be transport to a slaughter plant.
Fortunately, Sunny's guardian angel was watching over her. Folks from Pure Thoughts, Inc. horse and foal rescue were at the auction. Arriving with funds raised by the group known as Fans of Barbaro (this group has raised almost $500,000 and saved close to 1,000 horses from being slaughtered), they were able to outbid the other buyers to save six horses that day.
After the auction ended, Tracy and her partner Jennifer, used their remaining funds to buy more horses that day. They approached the pen that held horses "doomed to die," and purchased three healthy, young mares. One of the mares was pregnant. And one of the mares was a beautiful palomino paint.
Sunny, the lovely palomino mare, found her way to Michelle and now belongs to her family. Her future life will be filled with kindness, respect and love. She and Rally will be romping and playing together, two miracle endings for two very fortunate horses.

1. I personally know Michelle and Tracy and have known of their story. As an FOB I am very much involved in banning horse slaughter, donating to rescue horses & foals from slaughter and donating for laminitis research. I have gone from being very ignorant of the treatment of the horses in this country to outraged that the treatment is still going on.
I am going to adopt a horse myself in the very near future. It's the very least any of us can do to help save these beautiful and wonderful creations of nature.
